Who Qualifies For Public Housing?

1. Basic Requirements

The applicant ought to be 18 or older, and single persons are eligible. Although housing authorities often refer to a household as ‘family’, children or spouse is not required.

2. Income Restrictions

The gross income of the household should be less than 80% of the AMI (Area Median Income). The word AREA refers to where the voucher will be used, rather than the area you currently live.

3. Preferences

Some groups can receive preferences, which means less time to wait for assistance. Preferences of a waiting list often include the elderly, persons with disabilities, veterans, and local residents.

4. Common Disqualifiers

The housing authority has the right to disqualify a person if the applicant had a criminal record, signed in with wrong information, or had rent arrears formerly.
