Who Qualifies For Rent Assistance？

Unlike low income housing, rent assistance generally requires that the applicant’s household makes less than 50% of the Area Median Income. Also, the applicant has to be 18 or older.

Criminal records, past evictions, rent arrears history and credit checks are important qualifiers when agencies decide if the applicant is eligible for rent assistance.

According to CFR 24, Subtitle A, Part 5, Subpart F§5.609, published by the HUD, income comprises many parts. The main components among them are the full amount of wages and salaries, the income from the operation of a business, interest, and dividends.
